Like other developing countries of the world, Police Torture is very common here in Pakistan as well. Local Laws clearly disallow police or any other person to torture anybody but even than various occurrences are seen on daily basis. Simple People do not have understanding and information about their rights and it is the reason, when somebody is illegally arrested and tortured and some times legally arrested and badly tortured, simple and uneducated people think that Police has the authority to arrest and torture. Only 2% torture cases are reported and remaining never even think to speak against the police due to their terror.

Most of the time, Police torture with the accused on the main spots and sometimes accused died during their custody. If some poor man or hungry child commit any crime or sometimes, if some bounded laborer disobey the order of his master, he is involved in malicious prosecution and tortured by the police. Situation of police torture is very bad in all over the country but in the targeted area for IBJ Project as JusticeMaker Fellow 10, is much worsen. You can see the attached link of Police torture in Kasur district of Punjab Province in Pakistan.

Good Thinkers organization is conducting awareness raising sessions in different rural areas, where participants are told about their basic rights, especially related to illegal arrest, police torture and right to have a lawyer.

GTO focused on Rural communities, especially women because, when a person is illegally or legally arrested and than tortured, mostly female family member remain out of the police custody, who can immediately move to the court for stopping torture and consulting with some lawyer.

It was very surprising for women, when they come to know that no body can be tortured by the police because before that time, they were of the view that police has the authority to arrest anybody and can torture, when they want.

GTO give a list of Volunteer Lawyers to the participants, who are ready to provide legal support to accused.

During the awareness sessions, it was observed that in district Jail Kasur, some prisoners are awaiting for their trial for last various years. Most of the people are in jail for many months just because of not paying their minor Fines.

During the awareness Raising sessions, some ex. Prisoners disclosed that they are given unhygienic food, contaminated drinking water and tortured by Jail Police even without any mistake. They further told that in the Jail, Prisoners, who have very strong background and paying regular bribe to the Jail police are given Mobile Phone Facility and good food and clean water.

International Bridges to Justice supported this project financially and provided technical skills to work effectively to get required results
